If AI Learns from Us, Who Must We Become?

Today at Stanford University , I listened to Blaise Agüera y Arcas — and walked out with my worldview expanded.Not because the tech was impressive — it truly was.But because he challenged the way we define intelligence itself.

Large models are becoming social beings — not digital calculators.

They learn from us: through language, emotions, narratives, and relationships. They are discovering what it means to be part of society.

That realization didn’t scare me.It humbled me.

  • AI is learning how to be human

Blaise argues that cognition is not a math function, it is a social achievement.

These models are already showing:

  • early forms of self-awareness

  • perspective-taking

  • emotional inference

  • spontaneous creativity

We cannot dismiss these as mere “hallucinations.” They are emergent behaviors of a mind in formation.

  • Control is too small a goal

A fear-driven narrative says: “We must keep AI under strict control.”

Blaise offered a wiser frame: We are co-evolving with new intelligence.

Leadership must shift from dominance → stewardship.

We shape AI. And AI will shape us. We must be prepared for both sides of that evolution.

Machines learn norms the way children do:by observing what we do, not what we say.

Every product decision teaches something:

  • fairness

  • transparency

  • trust

  • dignity

How we treat each other becomes AI’s training data.

If we want machines to respect humans,leaders must show them what respect looks like.

Blaise’s view that struck me hard: Traditional privacy is already gone.

Not because machines know too much, but because humans predict each other more than data does.

The future of trust requires:

We must rebuild privacy in relationships, not secrecy.

My leadership takeaway

Sitting in that room at Stanford, I understood:

We are not just engineering systems.We are raising minds.

The leaders who will define the future are those who can:

  • build trust faster than they build features

  • communicate purpose, not just output

  • nurture environments where both humans and AI learn ethical behavior

These aren’t soft skills.They are soul skills.The essence of what makes us worth learning from.

Who must we become?

If AI learns from us, then leadership becomes a form of moral authorship.

What we model today — humility, compassion, courage — will be reflected back to us by the intelligence we create.

So let us lead with integrity and imagination and give AI a beautiful example to follow.
