Costa Rica Blue Zone Expedition: A Journey to True Happiness
Why Was I Here?
I embarked on an 8-day journey to one of the world’s largest #Blue Zones, Costa Rica, where people live longer and happier lives. My goal was to learn from their way of life and discover what I could bring back to my own.
When Do You Feel True Freedom?
Take a moment and ask yourself: When do you feel truly free? Is it when you’re out in nature, far from responsibilities and distractions? Is it when you're creating, expressing, or simply being present in the moment?
For me, it was in a boat, surrounded by the vast ocean and sky, listening to birds singing. In that moment, I felt completely embraced by nature—no deadlines, no expectations, just pure existence. That was my sense of liberty.
What about you? When was the last time you felt completely unburdened? What would it take to invite more of that feeling into your daily life?
The Four Elements of True Well-Being
Water: Flowing with Life
As we traveled through the islands, surrounded by the vast ocean, I was reminded of water’s wisdom. Water teaches us the highest virtue—flexibility, selflessness, and strength through softness. It flows around obstacles instead of fighting them, nourishes all without seeking praise, and, over time, carves through rock with gentle persistence.
Lesson: Solving conflicts by staying calm and adaptable. Helping others without expectation. Prioritizing peace over control.
Earth: Staying Grounded
Spending days hiking through lush forests and climbing mountains, I felt an unbreakable connection with nature. The physical effort of moving through the terrain made me appreciate the grounding force of the earth beneath me. The balance between human development and environmental preservation is crucial. On top of a mountain, overlooking the vast land, I felt limitless—reminded of the beauty of this planet and our duty to protect it.
Lesson: Stay grounded in gratitude. Find strength in stillness. Respect and preserve the natural world.
Fire: Igniting Passion
We immersed ourselves in the traditional culture of Costa Rica, learning the ancient art of pottery making. Shaping clay with our hands, creating something from imagination, I felt a deep sense of creativity and passion come alive. What fuels my fire? Living out my faith, being kind, and fully using the talents entrusted to me. Just as Matthew 25:29 teaches, those who use their gifts will be given more. Passion is not just about ambition but about living with purpose.
Lesson: Embrace your calling. Use your gifts fully. Serve others with passion.
Air: Letting Go and Trusting the Flow
Climbing through the dry forests, we finally reached a skydiving site. Standing at the edge, feeling the wind rush past, I truly felt the element of air surrounding me. It was a reminder to trust the flow of life, to embrace the unknown, and to surrender to the journey. Where does my air take me? I follow the flow of life, saying “yes” to what comes my way, trusting that a greater plan is unfolding. As Matthew 6:33-34 reminds us, when we seek purpose, everything else falls into place.
Lesson: Let go of worries. Trust the journey. Embrace the unknown with faith.
The Real Takeaway: Are You Chasing Happiness or Living It?
Happiness is not a destination; it is a way of life. In a world focused on working harder and achieving more, we often neglect our well-being. But true happiness isn’t just about success—it’s about balance, connection, and inner peace.
Take a moment. Step away from the daily grind. Reconnect with yourself and nature. Prioritize what truly matters.
